Why Cambridgeshire?
About Cambridgeshire County Council,
the 2026 hosts...
This two-day conference is an excellent opportunity to discover the impact of transformational change in a people-friendly county.
There will be a warm and exciting welcome from Cambridgeshire, for experts and change-makers from across the UK and beyond.
It will be a great opportunity to share ideas, experiences and practical examples of building or re-purposing streets and neighbourhoods for people.
Cambridgeshire’s Active Travel Strategy has provided a comprehensive set of policies that will enable quality provision of active travel infrastructure and initiatives in Cambridgeshire, contributing to the County Council’s target to achieve net zero carbon by 2045.
Cambridgeshire’s Local Cycling and Walking Infrastructure Plan (LCWIP) has been developed and will sit under Cambridgeshire’s Active Travel Strategy. The LCWIP process identified the top priority active travel routes in each district for new or improved infrastructure for walking and/or cycling.

Schemes of note include:
-
Milton Road is Cambridge's blueprint for inclusive walking and cycling infrastructure - CYCLOPS segregation, side road crossings and more
-
The Greater Cambridge Greenways project, which connects villages to the city
-
The Chisholm Trail, a traffic-free path from Cambridge North to the main train station
-
The "Dutch roundabout" in Cambridge – the UK's first Dutch-style roundabout, located at the junction of Fendon Road and Queen Edith's Way, was built to improve cyclist and pedestrian safety
-
And not forgetting the campaigners! Camcycle (the Cambridge Cycling Campaign) is one of the UK's most active local charities working for more, better and safer cycling in Cambridge and the region. Since 1995, its work has ensured the delivery of cycle facilities such as paths, lanes, traffic signals, bridges and cycle parks - and will be helping delegates to visit and experience many of them at Active County Cambridgeshire....
"I am delighted that our county will host Active County Cambridgeshire 2026. This event provides a wonderful platform to showcase our growing portfolio of active travel projects – from the First Cycle Street and A10 Active Travel Bridge to the expanding Greenways network, which connects communities directly into Cambridge.
"These schemes highlight our commitment to creating safer, healthier, and more sustainable ways for people to move around our county. Alongside the infrastructure, our behaviour-change programmes are helping residents, schools, and businesses embrace walking, wheeling, cycling, and shared travel as part of everyday life. Hosting this conference gives us the opportunity to share learning, strengthen partnerships, and inspire the next phase of active travel delivery.
"I look forward to welcoming delegates to experience first-hand the innovation and ambition driving Cambridgeshire’s cleaner, greener transport future."
Councillor Alex Beckett, Chair, Cambridgeshire County Council’s Highways and Transport Committee
