



The UK Active Travel Awards at Active County Cambridgeshire 2026
Entry criteria
The UK Active Travel Awards celebrate excellence across the active travel sector,
recognising projects, initiatives, teams, and individuals that make walking, cycling, and wheeling a natural choice for everyday journeys.
General requirements for all entries
All entries should:

Clearly state the project, initiative or team being submitted
-
Include measurable outcomes, where possible (e.g. uptake, participation, safety improvements, behaviour change, or policy impacts)
-
Demonstrate innovation, creativity, or excellence in delivery
-
Provide context, including background, challenges, and how the approach addressed them
-
Highlight collaboration, community engagement, and inclusivity
-
Be written in plain, accessible English
What the Judges want to see
Judges will assess entries based on four core principles:

Impact – Evidence of measurable outcomes to benefits, including social, environmental, or health impacts
-
Innovation – Creative approaches, novel solutions, or new methods in design, policy, engagement, or delivery
-
Quality of delivery – Clear planning, high standards in design or execution, adherence to best practice, and effective project management
-
Leadership and Collaboration – Effective teamworking, partnerships, stakeholder engagement, and championing of active travel principles
Entries should provide clear evidence against these criteria and demonstrate why the submission stands out in its category.
Supporting Materials

Entries may include maps, plans, images, diagrams, videos, testimonials, case studies, or other media

Visual materials should clearly support the written submission and highlight key achievements

Any quantitative data, charts, or metrics should be clearly referenced and explained

Each entry must stay within the 3,000 word limit for text
-
There is no limit on the number of images or supporting documents
-
Entries should be submitted online via the UK Active Travel Awards portal before Friday 15 May 2026, 17.00

Shortlisted entries will be notified on Wednesday 6 June 2026, with winners announced live on 14 July 2026 during Active County Cambridgeshire 2026
Category specific criteria
1. Best Active Travel Infrastructure Project
Entries should demonstrate:

Planning, design, and delivery excellence for active travel routes, junctions, School Streets, Low Traffic Neighbourhoods, or public realm schemes
-
Accessibility for all users, including walkers, cyclists, and wheeled mobility users
-
Measurable improvements in safety, accessibility, or uptake of active travel
-
Sustainability and consideration of environmental impact
-
Any innovative materials, design approaches, or delivery techniques used
2. Best Behaviour Change or Engagement Initiative
Entries should demonstrate:

Tangible success in encouraging people to walk, cycle, or wheel more
-
Clear evidence of engagement with communities, schools, workplaces, or the public
-
Creativity in campaigns, programmes, or activities that influence behaviour
-
Measurable outcomes such as participation levels, modal shift, or behavioural change
-
Integration with local policy, planning, or infrastructure strategies where relevant
3. Best Walkable Neighbourhood Scheme
Entries should demonstrate:

Prioritisation of pedestrian movement and accessibility
-
Quality of urban design, pavement design, crossings, pedestrian signals and traffic calming measures
-
Safety, inclusivity, and accessibility for all ages and abilities
-
Evidence of innovative approaches in neighbourhood design, whether in new developments or retrofitting existing areas

Engagement with local communities or stakeholders during design and delivery
4. Best Active Travel Team
Entries should demonstrate:

Effective teamwork, collaboration, and leadership
-
Clear evidence of achieving outcomes through coordinated efforts
-
Engagement across sectors, agencies, or organisations to deliver projects or initiatives
-
Creativity or innovation in overcoming challenges or delivering results
-
Recognition or influence beyond the immediate project or programme
5. Active Travel Champion /
Lifetime Achievement Award
(Judges' Choice)
This is an honorary award that will be selected by the Judges.
